The Curse of Frankenstein
1957 / UK / 83 min. / Colour
Director: Terence Fisher
Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Hazel Court, Robert Urquhart
Mary Shelley would recognize her story in this retelling – the pathos and the tragedy are still very much to the fore and the horror, such as it is, is far more psychological than visual. Lee makes an excellent monster and it’s always good to see him paired with his old mucker, Peter Cushing, here playing the eponymous baron. Unlike today’s slasher, gore-fest horror franchises, this more restrained and thoughtful approach may be a little retro but is all the better for it.
